The Defenders will set up Phase 2 of Marvel’s Netflix shows

One of Marvel’s most successful creative endeavors has been its line of street-level Netflix shows, focusing on characters like Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones. It’s all been leading to this weekend’s event series The Defenders, but don’t think that means these heroes are slowing down.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Finn Jones (Danny Rand/Iron Fist) teased that the end of The Defenders will serve as the set-up for what comes next. Pretty much every character already has another solo season on the way, plus they’re adding The Punisher into the mix for good measure. So whatever creative form those seasons take, they’ll be influenced by the fallout of The Defenders.

Here’s an excerpt from Jones’ comments:

“[It] feels like the end of Phase One [and] the beginning of another phase. Let’s just say there are certain events that happen at the end of The Defenders which are going to rock everyone's world. So people aren't going to be the same after the end of The Defenders.”

The first four episodes of The Defenders released to critics have gotten solid reviews (I can also attest that it’s pretty good), and it looks like the miniseries is shaping up to do a solid job of bringing all these characters together into one story. No spoilers, but the event happening with The Hand is obviously big enough to draw the attention of all these disparate heroes — so it stands to reason the end is going to shake things up a bit.

The full, eight-episode run of The Defenders drops Friday on Netflix.
