SYFY’s The Expanse just landed at San Diego Comic-Con. Executive producers Naren Shankar and Mark Fergus joined cast members Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Catham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Cas Anvar, and Frankie Adams to hit the stage Saturday afternoon and discuss the jaw-dropping moments of last season and what we can expect in Season 3.
Season 2 might’ve ended in a huge shock, but shooting has already begun on Season 3 of The Expanse. And according to Dominique Tipper, the relationship between Holden and Naomi isn’t going well so far. After all, they have a lot to deal with when it comes to the aftermath of Season 2—which has left some members of the team in limbo. Steven Strait told us that at the end of Season 2 his character was consumed by fear and the only thing that could bring him back was the love of his crew. Now, he’s entering a “post-traumatic growth” stage where he’s trying to pick up the pieces and discover exactly what good he can do in the world.
Executive producer Mark Fergus categorized the seasons thus far by saying “Season 1 was 'What are the sides?,' Season 2 was 'Pick a side,' and Season 3 will be 'war.'” The characters ask themselves “what is the cost” in decisions they make. According to the team, there’s technically no “bad guy” on The Expanse, since everyone thinks they’re doing the right thing. Although Wes Catham brilliantly noted that human pride is “the villain” of The Expanse.
Check out the new trailer for Season 3:
The team had a few extra minutes to get up to shenanigans in San Diego, checking out The Expanse Escape Room, where Dominique apparently slipped into character and began acting a lot like Naomi. When the fan questions began to pour in, we found out Shohreh Aghdashloo would love to play a decision-maker politician (and be able to take out her enemies right away), while Cas Anvar had a last-minute freakout about a challenging scene in CQB. He found out something could explode very close to his eye right before they yelled "action."
At the moment, Bobbie Draper is a nomad of sorts — and did you know that her suit weighs 60 pounds? The stunt and effects teams work in conjunction with each other to make convincing effects, but the cast agreed that Naren Shankar is “the glue that holds everything together.” If they could choose which to be, the team is pretty evenly split with Shohreh and Wed as Earthers, Frankie and Dominique as Belters, and Was as a Martian (he’s really into their interplanetary police).
During the panel, Elizabeth Mitchell and David Straitham were announced to be coming to The Expanse. But since even naming their characters could be a spoiler for what’s to come, the team decided not to reveal any new information. Two short funny videos played in between moments of the panel included a joke about adding “in space” to the ends of sentences and a round of “science fact or science fiction” when it comes to the technology on the show. But Naren says they have the approval of some actual scientists, so it’s totally legit.
The Expanse returns in 2018.
