A new extended trailer, as well as more than a dozen photos from the Season 4 premiere of The Flash, show off a little of what the team has been going through since Barry Allen left to take his spot in the Speed Force prison, giving much more detail than the earlier teases. That choice in the Season 3 finale has clear consequences going forward, and not just for the people he left behind.
In the trailer, and much more clearly in the still photos, we see a Barry Allen who returns from the Speed Force but isn't really "back," at least not all the way mentally. The vacant looks on actor Grant Gustin's face are accompanied by lines and lines of strange text -- something to do with the secrets of the Speed Force and the very fabric of the universe, no doubt. Strange text in comics is always about the very fabric of the universe.
“Initially, Barry is pretty scrambled when he comes out of the Speed Force. He’s not himself, he’s talking nonsense," Gustin teased in a recent interview. "The way I see it, when he was in the Speed Force, he experienced his whole life laid out in front of him from start to finish. So in some sense, he comes out very wise, kind of knowing everything, but he has no understanding of what he’s seen, so he comes out very jumbled and talking what he thinks makes complete sense, but just nonsense to the rest of the crew.”
The title of the premiere, "The Flash Reborn," is meant to indicate that after this initial scrambling, they'll be showing viewers a more optimistic, hopeful Barry Allen once more on the series. Recently DC Comics used the term "Rebirth" for a soft reboot of their entire lineup that injected hope, legacy, and optimism back into their comic book world.
