If looks like the telekinetic wonders of Esme Frost and her sisters Phoebe and Sophie will continue in the second season of Fox's X-Men-based show The Gifted. Actress Skyler Samuels (Scream Queens), who plays all three sisters, is likely to be promoted to series regular once the new season begins.
We're wondering if "lots more" possibly includes playing more sisters -- there are five in the comics, all clones of Emma Frost, and they are referred to as "The Stepford Cuckoos."
Showrunner Matt Nix also talked about the challenge of choreographing three characters using only one actress, something that Tatiana Maslany (of the clone-tastic Orphan Black) might know a thing or two about. Much like with the work done by Maslany, stand-in actresses prove invaluable, though "stand-in" is hardly an appropriate name for them, as they are actresses giving full-on performances.
“They work out everything, and the other actresses are giving real performances within a scene,” said Nix. “If Skyler shoots a look to her sister, she’s shooting a look to a person who’s acting and interacting. And they study each others’ mannerisms, so if one actress raises her hand at a moment, Skyler will reproduce that action so you get a much more seamless performance."
The technique has a proven success record, and the popularity (and possible promotion) of the Frost sisters is a testament to it.
The Gifted will end its first season this Monday, with a two-hour episode on Fox.
