The Happytime Murders: Melissa McCarthy embarks on NSFW Muppet murder mystery in first trailer

Drop everything you're doing right now. We don't care what it is, because nothing is more important than this absolutely insane trailer for The Happytime Murders. Melissa McCarthy plays a Los Angeles cop in this neo-noir that is set in a world where (wait for it) puppets exist alongside human beings. It's got all the creative genius of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and all the adult-oriented crassness of Team America: World Police and Avenue Q. Oh, and the tagline is also pure genius: "No Sesame. All Street."

Not only that, but the movie is directed by Jim Henson's son, Brian Henson, who made such Muppet classics as The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. So this is a basically R-rated Muppets film developed with the oversight of the Muppet creator's own flesh and blood. How awesome is that?! And in true Muppets fashion, The Happytime Murders is stuffed (much like the puppets) with big-name celebrities like Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale, Elizabeth Banks, and Leslie David Baker.

Watch the first red band trailer below and prepare for your jaw to hit the floor with a resounding thud. Just make sure any and all kids are out of the room when you do.

By all regular rules of the universe, this movie should not exist, but it does and it could be one of the best comedic gems of the summer. With Jim Henson's son in charge, the puppet sex, drug abuse (they snort it with Twizzlers), and murder will make us remember the childlike spirit that Jim infused into his work, while also providing pure R-rated entertainment for grown-ups. And based on the trailer, this one's gonna be a hard R, so don't be fooled by the colorful-looking characters.

The Happytime Murders is brought to you by the letters "P" and "H" for puppet homicide. Who is knocking off the cotton-based denizens of L.A.? We'll find out on August 17.
