The Force is strong with this one. After an incredible Friday, Star Wars: The Last Jedi exceeded expectations opening to huge box office numbers in a massive weekend win for Disney.
The Last Jedi opened this weekend in theaters to a whopping $220 million debut in North America according to The Hollywood Reporter. This makes it the second largest debut in history behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened to $247.9 million back in December 2015. Star Wars is the first franchise to have two films hit over $200 million opening weekend.
Only a few other films have broken the $200 million opening number including two other franchise films Jurassic World and The Avengers. This news closes out a big week for Disney who announced their 21st Century Fox buy-out. So yeah, they've probably popped some champagne over at their offices.
Many Star Wars fans are likely to see The Last Jedi multiple times in theaters and with the holidays approaching, the film will continue to do well throughout the last two weeks of 2017. International opening numbers were at $230 million but the global total will only continue to grow as the film doesn't open in China until January 5, 2018.
So if you're heading to theaters to catch The Last Jedi, you likely won't be alone. However, maybe you can at least use the Force to get some good seats for the show.
