Everything from the latest trailer to the new promo material for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has fans theorizing over what will happen to Luke Skywalker once he makes his long-awaited return. So what does Last Jedi director Rian Johnson think about those theories?

Potential spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi below!

The Hollywood Reporter asked Johnson to chime in on the theories that Luke will wind up on the Dark Side of the Force (even Mark Hamill himself is having some fun with that one), and though he obviously couldn’t reveal a central plot point from the sequel, he said he does enjoy seeing fans poring over every scrap of information they can find to try and figure it out.

Here’s the choice excerpt from Johnson for context:

“Having been a Star Wars fan myself for the past 40 years, having spent most of my life on the other side of the curtain, I know the anticipation and the guesswork and theorizing is all part of the fun and game of it. So I love it. I love seeing what people are thinking, seeing what they’re guessing, seeing what they’re anticipating … Each new film hopefully re-contextualizes what came before it. That’s part of the game. Yes, it’s a continuation of not only The Force Awakens but also of the legacy leading up to it.”

The most interesting bit? He pointed to how each film aims to “re-contextualize” what came before. So, just because Luke is looming over that new poster in the same spot other baddies have occupied for decades, it might not mean what it always means. If anything, the question of Luke’s allegiance looks to be a central theme in The Last Jedi, and most likely the result will surprise us all in a couple of months. But the wait certainly won’t stop us from theorizing.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15.

Give us your best theory in the comments — is Luke really turning evil?
