Fresh off the success of the recent Batman spin-off, LEGO is now a bona fide hit film franchise. So what can we expect from the next proper sequel?
The LEGO Movie 2 is set to helmed by Mike Mitchell, but LEGO Batman director Chris McKay recently chatted with the Shanlian on Batman podcast about the plans for the flagship sequel. McKay said they've certainly ramped up the ambition for the second outing (which is saying something), teasing that it's basically a giant musical space adventure. Which isn't a huge shock, considering we've already seen a fair share of spaceships (SPACESHIP) and musical numbers in the first film.
Here's McKay's choice quote:
"LEGO 2 is going to be this big musical and space action movie. They need a lot of the writing, a lot of development, not only with script development, but development with songwriters. So it was very ambitious to get that movie out."
It sounds like the studio has big plans, but there's still a whole lot of work to be done. It's not easy to make an all-CGI movie, especially one with as many moving parts (no pun intended) as a LEGO movie. Luckily, it's not actually scheduled to open until February 2019, so there's plenty of time to conjure up the next earworm tune to replace "Everything Is Awesome."
