Rare The Walking Dead variant issue reportedly crawling with 7 extra pages

It's been around for a long time, but The Walking Dead comic is still finding ways to surprise us. The Walking Dead #171 by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard and published by Skybound/Image Comics, which just came to life today, is already selling for $75 on eBay, and this is why.

The new character known as the Princess may have stolen the scene with her purple hair, designer goggles and very un-zombie-hunter pink fur coat, but there’s something else pink that fans are now keeping their eyeballs on. Most of the Lorenzo De Felici variant covers (the one with undead lumbering all over the place in a greenish glow) have a blue signature. Don’t shoot yet. What you really want to watch out for is the copies with a pink signature, which is undoubtedly an ode to the gun-wielding fashionista. Bleeding Cool reports the pink signature means there are seven more pages stalking through that issue, and unlike zombies bawling in the distance, there were no warning signs.

While I haven’t gotten my claws on one of these, the extra pages supposedly take the story forward from the end of #171 and are thought to be, at least by fans who can only theorize at the moment, the first seven pages of #172. Now here’s the strategy if you want to hunt one down. There was approximately one pink signature #171 copy for every 30 in one store, one for every 7 in another, so your chances of grabbing that seven-page preview are anywhere from 1 in 10 to 1 in 20. You may or may not have a better chance of singlehandedly finishing off an entire zombie horde. Cue the eBay bidding wars.

Now that the difference has become more obvious than the difference between living and undead, the market knows, and when the market knows, your wallet could get gnawed. After one copy hit $40 on eBay yesterday, the price crawled up to $45, $50, $60 and finally $75. There is no telling if enough issues of the pink signature variant will invade stores and push the value back down, but you know what will happen if they don't.

This might sound blasphemous to hardcore collectors, but you may want to just wait for #172. Your bank account will thank you.
