Update: Bernecker tragically passed away following his injuries on the set. Our original report is below.
Our thoughts are with veteran stunt man John Bernecker and his family after he was seriously injured on the set of AMC’s The Walking Dead yesterday in Georgia, where the show’s eighth season is currently being shot.
According to Deadline, "Bernecker and an actor were rehearsing a fight scene that was supposed to end with a routine fall from a balcony, but he lost his footing and fell 30 feet to a concrete floor."
Since the fall, AMC has temporarily shut down production while issuing the following statement:
“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for ‘The Walking Dead’ and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set. He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Unfortunately, thoughts and prayers may not be enough, as Deadline is reporting that Bernecker is brain-dead and on life support.
“John deserves to be seen by every neurosurgeon and doctor there is until one of them sees the life we all know he has in him and bring him back to us... THIS ISNT FAIR,” said Jennifer Cocker, Bernecker's girlfriend, in a Facebook post.
Bernecker garnered his first credit for Anytown back in 2009, and has since earned 92 stunt credits, while working on many of our favorite titles, including Logan, The Hunger Games and the upcoming Black Panther. He’s also earned 13 acting credits, including work on Goosebumps, American Ultra and True Detective.
The SAG-AFTRA guild is currently investigating the accident.
