If you sat through all of Avengers: Infinity War and claim that you didn't shed a single tear in anguish, then you are either lying or a robot sent from the future to assasinate the saviour of humanity. There is not in between.
**SPOILER WARNING: There are major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War below. We cannot stress how major these spoilers are. You have been warned!***
Ask anyone who saw the movie and they'll tell you the saddest moment occurs moments before the credits begin to roll when Thanos (Josh Brolin) rips the Mind Stone straight out of Vision's (Paul Bettany) cranium, unites all six Infinity Stones, and snaps his fingers, effectively wiping out half of all life in the universe.
Everything goes eerily quiet as one Avenger after another begins to crumble away into ash. Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Groot (Vin Diesel), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) all dissapear into oblivion. The saddest of all the fallen heroes, however, is Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who, still on Thanos's home planet of Titan, begins to feel sick. He crumbles into Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) arms, crying that he doesn't want to go. Even if you had a bowl of nails for breakfast without any milk, the scene is enough to reduce you to a blubbering puddle of salty, salty tears.
His destiny fulfilled, Thanos retires to his bungalo to watch the sun set on "a grateful universe" as we cut black. We've never seen anything like it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the villain victorious over nearly every hero that tried to stand in his way. It's certainly a bleak ending and a major cliffhanger that expertly sets up Avengers 4, but the bodies of Peter Parker and the rest were barely cold when the Internet decided to turn them into a meme.
Take a look below and prepare to laugh and then, remembering what happened during the final moments of Infinity War, cry gently into your pillow.
