It's no secret that Star Wars is George Lucas' biggest cash cow. The property is so successful, it's literally given him a license to print (or should that be mint?) money. Specifically—coins.
The folks of New Zealand are taking their love of all things Star Wars to the mint. The South Pacific island of Niue is grabbing characters from the sci-fi series and turning them into legal tender.
The New Zealand mint is producing a set of 40 coins that will have a face value of NZ$2 (£1). They'll feature color depictions of Luke, Leia, Darth Vader, Yoda and the rest of the gang on one side, while a sketch of Queen Elizabeth II will appear on the other.
Now you might be asking yourself, "Who would actually spend a Star Wars coin?" The people of Niue are aware that no one in their right mind would exchange Star Wars money for actually goods. That's why they're targeting collectors and investors in hopes that they'll pay money to get money. It's all part of an effort to help boost their struggling economy.
If you're interested in adding the coins to your collection, sets of four (each containing 1oz. of silver) will sell for NZ$469 (£235).
