SYFY WIRE documentary 'Todd McFarlane: Like Hell I Won't' unleashes official trailer & release date

By Jacob Oller
Todd McFarlane

Few in the world of comics can boast the impact of Todd McFarlane. The record holder for longest-running creator-owned comic is in a class of his own as the co-founder of Image Comics and creator of both Spawn and Venom. Now fans wanting a closer look at the prolific creator will have unprecedented access thanks to a new documentary from SYFY WIRE. Announced at last year's New York Comic ConTodd McFarlane: Like Hell I Won't dropped its first trailer today courtesy of the man himself.

Director David Oster's film — a co-production from SYFY WIRE and online content creation studio Tongal that will air on SYFY later this month — features interviews with those close to McFarlane, like Marvel CCO Joe Quesada, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, NFL great Larry Fitzgerald, and many more. Check out a sneak peek below:

This comes after McFarlane himself debuted the trailer below:

"There's no shortcut to get to 300 issues of a comic book," the trailer opens. McFarlane's Spawn surpassed 300 issues last year, supplementing his toy business with a milestone for his comic character. The comic creator has been a regular on the convention circuit, which is just another mark of his longevity in the industry over the course of his financial ups and downs over the years.

Todd McFarlane: Like Hell I Won't Key Art

"To me, that's way more significant than how cool Spawn is and how good of an artist or writer Todd McFarlane is. It's that 25 years later, the person who started this is still driving that car," McFarlane previously told SYFY WIRE. "You don't have to like me [or] my character, but what you should like is that there's now proof that you — as a creative person — can now create something, own it, and 25 years later, still own it. That's the story to me over everything else ... I'm gonna be an example and Image Comics is gonna be a glowing example."

McFarlane will also have a panel at Comic-Con@Home — SYFY Presents: The Untold Tales of Todd McFarlane — on July 23, featuring the comic legend speaking alongside Marc Silvestri and J. Scott Campbell. This documentary also accompanies a GoFundMe charitable sweepstakes from July 20 - Aug. 17 that fans can enter by donating to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. Those who win will get exclusive signed merch from McFarlane himself.

Todd McFarlane: Like Hell I Won't airs on SYFY at 11 p.m. Eastern on July 25, kicking off SYFY Fan Fest — a weeklong SYFY celebration of fandom featuring the Season 4 premiere of Wynonna Earp, extended episode of SYFY WIRE's The Great Debate, and a SYFY WIRE After Dark special.
