Spidey's going be doing a lot of webslinging over the next few years.
In addition to next month's Spider-Man: Homecoming, we already know that Tom Holland is in Avengers: Infinity War (and probably Avengers 4), and it was kind of a given that he'd be suiting up again as Peter Parker for a second standalone Spider-Man outing (unless Homecoming tanks completely, which doesn't seem very likely).
But we didn't know that a full Spider-Man trilogy starring the young British actor was in the works until he let it slip in an interview with French outlet AlloCiné (via The Wrap): "There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker and Spider-Man especially to grow in the next two movies."
Asked if the development of a third film was news, Holland simply said, "Sorry Marvel. Whoops." He then doubled down:
"[Spider-Man is] definitely not the finished article by the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming and I really look forward to exploring the different ways he can grow up and go through puberty I guess. It’s going to be an exciting couple of movies...Yeah, there’ll be Spider-Man 2 and 3. It won’t be Homecoming 2 and 3."
Note that Holland mentioned Marvel in his comments, which would seem to indicate that Marvel Studios will continue to partner with Sony on the next two Spider-Man films. Hopefully that paves the way for Spidey to also show up in whatever comes after the next two Avengers movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while allowing for other characters from the MCU to visit with him in his solo trilogy.
Are you surprised that a new Spider-Man trilogy is in the works? Who and what would you like to see in the next two movies?
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7.
