Japanese movies range from the elegiac (Tokyo Story, Nobody Knows) to the adventurous (Yojimbo, Zatoichi) to the just plain wacky (Funky Forest). It looks like Yakuza Apocalypse, which is coming to America on Oct. 9, is one of the wackier ones.
As you’ll see in the trailer below, Yakuza Apocalypse (directed by Takashi Miike) is a movie about the Yakuza, aka the Japanese mafia. But our protagonist isn't merely a criminal. Nope, he’s a vampire, too. And soon he’ll find himself on a quest for revenge.
According to IMDb, “In the ruthless underground world of the yakuza, no one is more legendary than boss Kamiura. Rumored to be invincible, the truth is he is a vampire-a bloodsucking yakuza vampire boss! … With his dying breath, Kamiura bites Kageyama, passing on his vampire powers to the unsuspecting yakuza. As he begins to awaken to his newfound abilities, Kageyama’s desire to avenge the murder of boss Kamiura sets him on a course for a violent confrontation …”
It has humor. It has yakuza. It has vampires. It played at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival to decent reviews.
All you need now is a box of popcorn.
