Star Trek started out on television and, despite what you may have heard, it may return back there one day.
J.J. Abrams very recently said that Trek wouldn't be returning to television any time soon because "What I’ve been told from the powers that be is that they’re not interested."
If that news was as taxing to your Trekkie heart as it was to ours, don't lose hope just yet. Star Trek writer Bob Orci still has an interest in bringing Star Trek back to the small screen (where it belongs).
Apparently, while out promoting Ender's Game, Orci spoke with Sky News interviewer Joe Michalczuk, which prompted the following, promising tweet:
Bob Orci just told me they've had a meeting with CBS to revive @StarTrek on TV...This made me v excited— Joe Michalczuk (@joemichalczuk) October 8, 2013
Who "they" are exactly is a bit up in the air, although we'd imagine co-writer Robert Kurtzman is a strong contender for that position. Given that the two are presently having a great deal of success with their latest series, Sleepy Hollow, and that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also cruising along very nicely, we're willing to bet that, even if CBS had previously thought Trek would be too costly for TV, they're probably not thinking that way any longer.
The fact is, genre shows are doing very well these days and Star Trek has a larger built-on fanbase than it's ever had. So whether it's Orci bringing Trek back to TV, Bryan Fuller using his own ideas, the return of that old Star Fleet Academy concept, or something else entirely, we definitely want it to happen. The only question now is -- will CBS let it happen?
