TV THIS WEEK: Fear the Walking Dead returns, Lucifer finale, new Doctor Who and more

Contributed by

Welcome to the summer doldrums, that awkward few weeks when most shows are ending and the summer fare hasn't quite arrived. Despite a lack of usual hits, there's still plenty to check out this week. Heck, we even have a few basic cable movie recommendations for the particularly thin nights.

This week sees the season finale of Fox's excellent Lucifer series, as well as the season finale of FX's acclaimed parallel-history spy drama The Americans. We also have a new Doctor Who, the season finale of the Who spinoff series Class and a new installment of Fox's Gotham. But the real story of the week is the return of Fear the Walking Dead, which is pretty much the only zombie show to keep you elbows-deep in walkers until the flagship series returns in October.

Check out our full rundown below, and be sure to set your DVR accordingly.

Marvel's The Avengers (FX), Tuesday 7PM

If your DVR queue is all clear and there's nothing you’ve been binging on Netflix, then settle in and revisit the Grandaddy of Them All in Marvel's The Avengers. The movie has aged perfectly, and with director Joss Whedon stepping in to finish Justice League, it’s a great refresher on his style. Plus, you know, the movie is fantastic.

Wednesday, May 31

Iron Man Three (FX), Wednesday 7PM

Fans are fiercely divided on the quality of the third Iron Man, what with its epic bad guy fake-out and the fact that Tony Stark doesn’t actually spend all that much time being Iron Man. But, if you haven't seen it in a while, it's worth revisiting with a set of fresh eyes. You might just be surprised. It's also a chance to get your Stark fix in before Spider-Man: Homecoming in July.

Space Jam (VH1), Wednesday 9PM

Oh, Space Jam. A reminder of the era where Michael Jordan was the biggest athlete on the planet and a simpler time when Bugs Bunny was the biggest name in animation. If Iron Man Three isn't your, uh, jam, why not revisit this 1996 classic?

Thursday, June 1

Inception (Syfy), Thursday 7:30PM

Another slow night. If you're not binging anything in particular, Syfy will be showing Christopher Nolan's mind-bending thriller Inception. In case you’re wondering: yes, it's still fantastic.

Friday, June 2

The Dark Knight Rises (Spike), Friday 8PM

DC might be all about Batfleck these days, but relive the final moments of the Christian Bale era on this relatively slow weekend for new TV.

The Originals (The CW), Friday 8PM - "Phantomesque"

Klaus requests that his estranged siblings Rebekah and Kol return home to stand by their family against the Hollow. Meanwhile, Freya recruits Hayley for a dangerous journey and Marcel leads a hunt for the Hollow that puts him on a collision course with the person he is least prepared to face. Finally, Kol is forced to consider the lengths he would go to see Davina again.

Josh Gates' Destination Truth (Travel), Friday 9PM - "Island Jungles and the Filipino Lake Monster"

Josh Gates' Destination Truth (Travel) Friday 10PM - "UFOs in South America"

Josh Gates treks through South America on his team's first extraterrestrial hunt and finds a shocking discovery in Peruvian caves. Then, he heads out on the frigid waters of Turkey in search of the Lake Van monster.

Sunday, June 4

American Ninja Warrior (NBC), Sunday 8PM - "USA vs. the World"

No, it's not exactly sci-fi, but this show is still crazy fun and ridiculous. Top Ninjas from around the world gather to compete in the annual "USA vs. the World" showdown. Teams of five (with one alternate) compete on the first three stages of the show's punishing Las Vegas finals course.

300 (BBC America), Sunday 8:30PM

Back before Zack Snyder was a lightning rod of fanboy opinion, he was an up-and-coming director riding insanely high on the fantastic graphic novel adaptation 300. If you're up for a chest-thumping good time, it still delivers.
