TV THIS WEEK: The Librarians return; The Gifted, Z Nation and The Exorcist end

A few of the best, outside-the-box genre shows of the season wrap up this week as one of the wackiest adventures on cable makes its action-packed return.

Fox's excellent X-Men series The Gifted ends its first season, while the network's horror series The Exorcist also wraps its second season. SYFY's bonkers zombie series Z Nation is also bidding farewell with its fourth season finale, and BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency ends one of the most fascinatingly weird fantasy stories you might not be watching.

On the premiere front, TNT's excellent The Librarians is back for a new season. The show is a big, family friendly magical adventure that fits nicely into the old Warehouse 13 niche, with a dash of National Treasure thrown in for good measure. Seriously, it's a crazy-fun off-season show to check out while some of your usual fare might be on hiatus.

ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also continues its excellent fifth season this week with a new episode, and SYFY'S high-concept Happy! is set to drop its second episode. The network also has new installments of Van Helsing and Ghost Wars, if you're looking to up the creep factor around the holidays.

Check out our full rundown below and let us know what you'll be watching.

Tuesday

The CW's superhero slate is on hiatus until 2018, so Tuesday is admittedly thin over the next few weeks. That being the case, there should be a new episode of Hulu's Runaways dropping on the streaming service. Oh, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out on Netflix now — that one's great on a second or third viewing.

Beyond that, might be a good night to clean out the DVR and catch up on anything still pending.

After snooping around for Christmas gifts, Veronica uncovers a major secret Hiram has been keeping from her. Fallout from Jughead's encounter with Penny Peabody creates tension between him and FP. Meanwhile, a defiant Cheryl takes matters into her own hands after Penelope tells her they cannot afford Christmas this year. Finally, Betty and Archie's vow to take down the Black Hood once and for all leads to a dangerous showdown.

Vikings (History), Wednesday 9PM - "The Plan"

Guided by Bishop Heahmund's visions, the Saxons devise a battle plan. Meanwhile, Ivar the Boneless strategizes on his own as the Vikings face increasing pressure; and Bjorn Ironside finds himself in a new territory and must convince the local commander he is a trader and not a raider.

Happy! (SYFY), Wednesday 10PM - "What Smiles Are For"

Sax journeys through a dark past while he and Happy track his daughter; Merry and Amanda make a chilling discovery; Very Bad Santa coerces information out of Hailey about her dad.

Mr. Robot (USA), Wednesday 10PM - "Shutdown -R"

SEASON FINALE: Elliot tries to save Darlene, but things don't go as planned; Mr. Robot needs to step up or step back; and Angela considers the price.

Facing a threat within the FBI, the team is forced to run a covert operation out of Jane and Weller's apartment. A tattoo leads to a doctor with a deadly secret.

The Exorcist (Fox), Friday 9PM - "Unworthy"

Saturday

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (BBC America), Saturday 9PM - "Nice Jacket"

SEASON FINALE: Dirk fulfills the prophecy and restores order by courageously returning to Blackwing to where it all began. Elsewhere: Todd and Amanda go toe-to-toe with the villainous Suzie Boreton.

Sunday

This one makes for another relatively slow night. The Walking Dead is on hiatus, and Fox's typical genre-friendly line-up is also taking a break. It's the perfect night to kick back with a good book, or catch up on whatever might still be languishing on your DVR.

If all else fails, Scrooged is on AMC at 8PM — and we can all use a little Bill Murray around the holidays, right?
