Welcome to TV This Week! Your one-stop shop for all the cool sci-fi and fantasy stuff you should be watching over the next seven days!

It’s finally arrived: The CW’s massive “Invasion!” crossover arrives. The event kicks off on Supergirl, then feeds into Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow throughout the week. It’s arguably one of the biggest TV events ever attempted, and it’ll be positively insane to see so many heroes share the screen at one time. Regardless of whether you only watch some of these shows, be sure to set your DVR so you’ll catch ‘em all.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also returns this week, as we continue to follow Ghost Rider’s journey. If you haven’t been watching, it’s high time to come back. This show is really hitting its stride. Over on Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed.), the near-future thriller Incorporated makes its debut with a white-knuckle pilot into the world of corporate espionage.

George Lucas Almost Directs Apocalypse Now

The creator of the Star Wars mega-empire was on the short list to direct Apocalypse Now. There were just a few problems with his vision of the Vietnam war film. Namely, he wanted to film it in Vietnam and in 1970, when the war was still raging. Had things gone a little differently, Lucas would have had his hands too full to make the Star Wars saga (also, he might have been way too busy being killed in the line of fire).

SERIES PREMIERE: Spiga junior executive Ben Larson hides his real identity in order to infiltrate a very sinister corporate world and save the woman he loves in the series premiere of this futuristic drama. Producers Lobbied for Chewbacca to Wear Pants

Chewbacca stood seven feet tall and was a true beast. It was a foregone conclusion to studio execs that children would be scared of him and parents would be distracted by trying to get a glimpse of his undoubtedly well-endowed Wookie package. Mark Hamill said of studio execs, "I remember the memos from 20th Century Fox, 'Can you put a pair of lederhosen on the Wookie [sic]?"

Darth Vader Not Luke's Father

After the runaway success of the original film, Lucas brought in veteran screenwriter Leigh Brackett to write the rest of the trilogy. Brackett's leaked draft had a number of peculiar differences from the final version: Han teaches Luke how to weild a lightsaber, wampas have the ability to freeze people, and Yoda shows Luke a vision of his father in the swamp. Brackett passed away during rewrites, and Lawrence Kasdan was brought in. Kasdan and Lucas soon struck upon one of the greatest twists in sci-fi history.

A New Hope Considered as a Standalone

Early drafts of Star Wars: A New Hope saw the film as a self-contained body, with the Death Star's destruction brinigng down the entire Empire. But, as Lucas stated in 1994, "It wasn't long after I began writing Star Wars that I realized the story was more than a single film could hold. As the saga of the Skywalkers and Jedi Knights unfolded, I began to see it as a tale that could take at least nine films to tell - three trilogies - and I realized, in making my way through the back story and after story, that I was really setting out to write the middle story." Plus, hey, after the runaway success of the first film, there just had to be a sequel, whether it was already conceived that way, or not.

Originally a Flash Gordon Remake

Initially, to satiate his space war jones, George Lucas set out to remake the serial films about Flash Gordon. However he was unable to get the rights to the films, so Lucas set about creating his own space universe. Lucas borrowed liberally from the Flash Gordon films, including touches like the scrolling logo at the beginning and the cloud city.

Han Solo Was Originally a Green-Skinned Alien with Gills

Said Lucas, "[Han Solo] did start out as a monster or a strange alien character, but I finally settled on him being human so that there'd be more relationship between [Luke, Leia and Han]. That's where Chewbacca came in as the kind of alien sidekick." Yeah, we just can't see Leia falling for a frog-skinned creature, much less making out with him.

Harrison Ford Didn't Want to Do Return of the Jedi

One of the most dramatic endings to any sci-fi film to date came at the end of Empire Strikes Back when, OMG SPOILER ALERT, Han Solo was frozen in carbonite. The heightened drama this created was great, but it was not the reason for this huge character to be rendered alive, and in perfect hibernation. In fact, Harrison Ford was uncertain, at the time of filming Empire Strikes Back, whether he would return for another film. To keep the options open, George Lucas needed to create a stasis for Han Solo where he could die or he could live, and the carbonite scene was born.

Unlimited Sequels

Lucas, towards the beginning of his development of the Star Wars universe, saw the series as having an unlimited number of sequels, not unlike the James Bond franchise. Going hand-in-hand with the Flash Gordon serials, which numbered over one dozen, George Lucas saw the potential of each Star Wars being its own contained storyline. Fortunately, as work continued on writing, Lucas came to view the story as a continuous one, stretching across many films.

Jodie Foster as Leia?

Initially, the cast of Star Wars was conceived completely different than how it turned out. Burt Reynolds was in the running for the role of Luke, as was Jodie Foster for the role of Leia. George Lucas initially didn't want Harrison Ford in his film, as Ford had already appeared in Lucas' last film, American Graffiti. However, Harrison Ford hung around, helping other actors with their lines and doing screen tests, and eventually George Lucas realized the best actor for the role was right in front of him.

Lucas Wanted to Stop with Return of the Jedi

He stated his intention to cease making the films, ending the series with Return of the Jedi. The Battle

"Hello, old friend."

It's easy to forget that the Enterprise D was not Picard's first command. In fact, Jean-Luc has a bit of a complex past which comes rushing back when the Ferengi return his former vessel, the long lost USS Stargazer. Here we get a worthy Ferengi villain in Damon Bok. We also see Picard doubt himself as he is both figuratively and literally haunted by the ghosts of his past. And, in a tense climax, we see Riker have to outmaneuver a seemingly insane-with-grief Picard. See also: The Picard Maneuver.

Coming of Age

"Are you afraid, if I keep looking, I'll find that you're guilty?"

Rarely did Roddenberry allow for there to be serious conflict among the ranks but, in a rare move, TNG was playing the long game when Lieutenant Commander Remmick first set foot aboard the Enterprise. And it paid off. His surprise inquiry betrayed a worrysome paranoia growing deep within the heart of Starfleet and made us question whether or not there really was something devouring the organization from within. Meanwhile, Wesley Crusher loses at something for once. Will wonders never cease?

Westworld (HBO), Sunday, 9 p.m. - "The Bicameral Mind"

The latest episode of HBO's hit sci-fi series.

Where No One Has Gone Before

"Thought is the essence of where you are now."

For all the accusations that Wesley Crusher was nothing more than a Mary Sue, this episode played up the idea that what made Wes special could be both wondrous and dangerous. While the crew literally travels to destinations unseen and unimagined by human eyes, Picard, Wesley, and the mysterious Traveler take their first furtive steps towards the unlimited possibilities of existence; a theme which would be revisited again and again throughout the series.

The Last Man on Earth (Fox), Sunday, 9:30 p.m. - "Whitney Houston, We Have a Problem"

The Arsenal of Freedom

"That's a heck of a sales pitch."

Considering the story for this episode was in such turmoil that there was no shooting script the day production was set to begin, it should have been a real stinker. Instead, the episode that was meant to push the Crusher/Picard romance forward, wound up a morality play that heralded the dangers of greed and weapons of mass destruction. It might sound preachy, but it was tense and worked marvelously well.  All that, and it gave Geordi LeForge some much deserved time at the comm.
