It's a big week for summer TV, with another new series premiere and a couple of big finales.
Sunday we'll see the first episode of the much-anticipated new Damon Lindelof-led series The Leftovers, but as exciting as that might be to some, it might not be the most anticipated premiere of the week, as we'll also see the return of The Legend of Korra, Teen Wolf and Wilfred. On the finale end of things, we've got the first-season conclusion of Penny Dreadful and the third-season finale of Continuum. Plus an Under the Dome recap special to get you ready for season two.
Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?
Highlights of the Week
Under the Dome: Inside Chester's Mill (CBS) Monday, 10 p.m.
Season-one recap! - Last summer, this TV adaptation of Stephen King's massive novel about a small town stuck under a mysterious dome became a huge hit for CBS, and thanks in part to its success the summer event series keep coming from a whole host of networks, which is a very good thing for those of us who want more than just reruns and hours in movie theaters. Even at its weakest, the show was pulling in about 10 million viewers a week, something that a lot of network shows airing in the standard TV fall-to-spring TV season can only hope for, and season two seems poised to deliver more ratings success with a premiere episode scripted by King himself. Before that happens, though, you can relive (or perhaps catch up with) all the events of season one with this highlight special. Check out a preview below.
The Legend of Korra (NICK) Friday, 7 p.m. - "A Breath of Fresh Air," "Rebirth of a Nation," "The Earth Queen"
Season-three premiere! - In its first two seasons, The Legend of Korra proved it could pack the same kind of punch that its predecessor Avatar: The Last Airbender had. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive, fans watched in droves, and as a result anticipation for the third of the four seasons of the series is massive. It seems unlikely that a show like Avatar, which is so beloved by so many, could produce a sequel that's inspired the same kind of response, but here we are. Korra is a phenomenon in its own right, and Nickelodeon is celebrating that with a 90-minute, three-episode Book Three premiere. In these episodes, Korra discovers the unexpected consequences of leaving the spirit portals open, a band of criminals is on the hunt for the Avatar, and much more. Check out a preview below.
Continuum (Syfy) Friday, 10 p.m. - "Last Minute"
Season-three finale! - Continuum has never been a runaway hit, but it has developed a loyal core of viewers in both Canada and the United States, won more than a few awards in its home country and garnered a lot of acclaim from genre afficionados. We still don't know if a fourth season renewal will happen (though the show's writers are rumored to have plans for as many as ten seasons), but in the meantime, we'll see how well the season-three finale does in terms of American viewers. In this episode, Kiera and Liber8 form an unlikely alliance to try to stop Alec and his new technology. Check out a preview below.
The Leftovers (HBO) Sunday, 10 p.m. - "Pilot"
Series premiere! - Created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta (who also wrote the novel on which the show is based), this drama about the survivors of a global "Rapture" trying to get on with their lives in a small town is one of the most anticipated new dramas of the year, and could give a boost to HBO as that network prepares to bid farewell to ratings hit True Blood in a few weeks. It could also add a more cerebral, more subtle ongoing genre series to a network whose most successful genre project so far has been the very in-your-face Game of Thrones. To hopefully give the pilot episode a viewership boost, HBO is starting The Leftovers off with True Blood as its lead-in, but the show's also getting some favorable critical attention that, if it continues, could make it a prestige hit as well. Will this become HBO's next phenom show, or will it fizzle? We'll find out. Check out a preview for the series below.
Penny Dreadful (Showtime) Sunday, 10 p.m. - "Grand Guignol"
Season-one finale! - It seems like Penny Dreadful was only just getting started, but we have to bid farewell to season one this week. Don't despair, though. Season two was ordered very early, signifying Showtime's confidence in this period horror piece that's already garnered quite a bit of critical acclaim and a loyal and respectably sized (for Showtime) viewership. We're living in an age where horror on television seems to be gaining with each passing season, and this show seems like yet another sign of that. It'll be interesting to see how the show's profile grows and changes in the months between seasons one and two. For now, though, we focus on the finale, in which Vanessa and Sir Malcolm must face their worst nightmares. Check out a preview below.
