The X-Men are finally on primetime! While it's true that some fans have probably been experiencing a little superhero fatigue lately, the premiere of Fox's The Gifted on Monday night was proof that adapting a comic book narrative for the small screen doesn't have to be an overwhelming task. The world of the X-Men is large and seemingly neverending, but The Gifted makes the decision to condense the story down around a single family -- and grounds the entire series as a result. (Of course, the great-looking VFX don't hurt either.)
Critical response has, for the most part, been pretty favorable; reviews praised the show's decision to rely on some of the more recognizable (but not too famous) characters from X-Men canon, while others pointed out that The Gifted has the potential to be a hit right alongside its "sister" series, FX's Legion.
