For months now, actor Tyrese Gibson has teased his involvement in the upcoming Green Lantern movie. But what may have begun as wishful thinking on the part of fans and the actor himself may yet turn into reality.
In an interview with Collider, Gibson confirmed that he’d met with Warner Bros. about a role in their recently announced Green Lantern Corps movie (set to hit movie theaters in 2020). He started by saying he had nothing to do with that awesome piece of "promo art" depicting him as Green Lantern member John Stewart -- alongside a rumored Chris Pine (who is set to star in Wonder Woman) as Hal Jordan -- that floated around on Instagram a few weeks back, and said that it was truly the fans who took the initiative.
"Well I was innocent from the beginning," Gibson said. "I was at home eating a bowl of Lucky Charms in my drawers, my ugly feet were out, and I got about six direct messages on Instagram with photos of me as the Green Lantern."
Despite his protests, the actor ultimately admitted to meeting with the studio about a role in the superhero movie.
"I’ve already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros., so we’ll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I would be the best Green Lantern and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there’s a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing. So I would love to confirm something today but I can’t. We’ll just keep following up."
I personally happen to think Tyrese Gibson could be the perfect guy for the role of John Stewart, one of the most beloved characters in DC Comics' Green Lantern mythology, and it's clear the actor loves the character. "I took the oath, and I am going to commit myself to this process of seeing what’s possible," Gibson said. What do you guys think? Would you love to see Tyrese Gibson as John Stewart in Green Lantern Corps?
