Len Wiseman talked about adapting the popular Underworld franchise for TV close to a year ago and then we didn't hear anything, but it may just be that the idea has risen from the proverbial dead. According to Deadline, Len Wiseman has a deal in place to direct and executive-produce an Underworld TV series along with Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Eric Reid and Sony TV.
If past is prologue, the series would likely air on Fox — Underworld is part of his deal with 20th Century Fox Television. He's currently producing Lucifer and The Gifted for the studio, as well.
Love them or hate them, the Underworld films certainly did well and the team behind those movies are coming back for the series. Lakeshore Entertainment produced the films along with Sony films' Screen Gems while Wiseman directed the first two films and produced the last three. The question is, will the series see the success of both the first Underworld and Underworld: Blood Wars, or are we looking at another possible Underworld: Awakening? Blood Wars went back to what made the first film so popular and fans responded, but it doesn't sound like Kate Beckinsale will be slipping back into those signature boots anytime soon as Wiseman's take on the series doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for that.
“The series will be a pretty big departure from the films,” Wiseman said. “I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”
Does that mean less action and more intrigue? Vampire politics can get nasty in the Underworld universe, but it would be interesting to see more of the overall society. Let's hope they don't lose all of the B-Movie cheese that makes Underworld so great. A little comic book is good for the Vampire soul.
