Before Pixar's Andrew Stanton got his hands on (and the rights to) Edgar Rice Burrough's Barsoom books, a veritable rogues' gallery of directors tried to make their own John Carter of Mars movies. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow's Kerry Conran got the furthest, judging from this intriguing look at his vision for it.
According to lore, Predator's John McTiernan, Iron Man's Jon Favreau and Sin City's Robert Rodriguez all were attached to John Carter of Mars at some point, before falling out for any number of reasons. Paramount had the rights, and, before they lapsed, they gave Conran the green light to try and articulate his vision for the project, using some of the homespun ingenuity that served him so well on Sky Captain.
