The studio behind Ex Machina and The Witch is bringing you ... something.
A24 is a relatively small production company, but they've been delivering some great and highly original films lately, including the two outstanding genre entries mentioned above, as well as Green Room, Swiss Army Man, The Lobster and probable multiple Oscar contenders Moonlight and 20th Century Women.
So when the company abruptly releases a trailer for an untitled and previously unannounced new film that looks like some truly trippy science fiction, that's enough to get my undivided attention. Check it out!
I'm sure someone will eventually figure out what this is (unless the company delivers more info sooner rather than later), but for now all we have is this enigmatic and highly compelling teaser, which tells us nothing about the movie's plot, themes, creative team or release date. The only other clue we have is that the trailer was originally uploaded to YouTube with the title "TOR TSR WITNESS," but that doesn't give us much either.
There is already speculation out there that this is a new film from Shane Carruth, the iconoclastic director who brought us the micro-budgeted, mind-blowing time travel thriller Primer in 2004 and the even weirder Upstream Color in 2013. This new thing certainly bears some resemblance to Carruth's work, so that theory is as likely as any others right now. Other possible candidates? Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) and Jonathan Glazer (Under the Skin).
What do you think this is? And does it look interesting to you?
