Horrific things inspired by actual events always carry an extra tinge of terror, and Deliver Us From Evil fits the bill with panicky perfection.   Adapted from the 2001 cult novel Beware the Night, by real-life cop Ralph Sarchie, the film is rooted in diabolical doings spawned from an engrossing urban nightmare.  Sarchie, a veteran of the NYPD's 46th Precinct in the South Bronx, chronicled these bad deeds based on his otherworldly police cases and occult investigations.

This latest trailer features Bana battling bloody ghouls, creepy crawling corpses and a terrifying children's toy rolling across the floor.  Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose), it stars Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn and Joel McHale.

Here's the official synopsis:

In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes.  He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city.  Based upon the book, which details Sarchie’s bone-chilling cases.

Screen Gems' and Sony Pictures' Deliver Us From Evil descends upon theaters on July 2, 2014.
