Vin Diesel claims James Gunn wants a Rocket and Groot spinoff, and we hope he's not lying

There’s no denying Guardians of the Galaxy is the breakout success of the MCU. With the second film poised to make a boatload of money in the US. next weekend (and already piling up stacks internationally), star Vin Diesel claims there could be the germ of a spinoff brewing.

In a chat with USA Today, Diesel (who voices Groot) claimed director James Gunn wants to make a spinoff film focused on Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Which, you know, sounds just about crazy enough to actually work, right? Looking to the comics, there’s a fairly strong string of stories and adventures with Rocket and Groot going solo. They're also rocking their own animated spinoff, so yeah. There’s certainly a template for something like this to build on. Plus, it’d take two of the most popular characters from the Guardians (admittedly the two CGI characters, but still) and expand the universe.

For what it’s worth, here is Diesel's comment:

“[Writer/director] James Gunn has always wanted a Rocket and Groot movie. And I know that Disney is very much into being successful. And the most successful poster in Disney’s future is the poster that has ‘Groot vs. Hulk.’ … (The world) cannot wait to see it.”

When asked about Diesel’s claim, Gunn laughed and said “Vin has a lot of ideas,” and he doesn’t “know where he comes up with these things.” Mmmhmm. But really, as Marvel looks to line up its next phase or two of films after Avengers: Infinity War and it’s sequel, this isn’t the craziest idea. It’d give the studio an extra Guardians film on the schedule, and you know they’d rope in Chris Pratt’s bankable Star-Lord for a supporting gig.

In a world where Ant-Man & The Wasp, Black Panther and Captain Marvel are all on the board — why not Rocket and Groot?
