Last we heard, Will Smith was tentatively involved in a proposed I Am Legend follow-up—but now it seems the original film's star will not be back for the long-in-development sequel/prequel. But that doesn't mean it won't still happen anyway.
The prospects for I Am Legend 2 came up in a recent interview, and Smith said producers are working up a treatment—but at the moment, he's not involved:
"Producers are working on it," he said. "I'm not actually working on it. If it's great, I'm into it."
When asked if he eventually would be involved, Smith confessed: "Probably not."
The idea of a Smith-led sequel always seemed a little odd, considering he died at the end of the first film, and you have to wonder how viable the franchise would be without his name attached to it.
Smith goes on to say that he's a little tired of doing sequels, and wants to try out some new ideas before he gets too old to pass as an action star:
"I don't want to be the sequel guy. I figure I've got about six or seven more years where I can run and jump a little bit and then I'm going butt and gut for the rest of my career. Butt and gut."
Burned out or not, Smith said he wouldn't completely turn his back on his existing franchises. But he said it would take a "groundswell of support" to get one off the ground.
Sound off: Would you like to see an I Am Legend sequel without Smith?
