The third season of The Walking Dead finally debuts this Sunday, and showrunner Glen Mazzara promises the brutal zombie survival tale will continue to bring the pain. In fact, it seems at least a few major players won't make it to the finale alive. Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead comics and potentially season three!
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Mazzara was asked if the television run would stay true to a storyline in the comics that saw the character of Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies on the series) and her young baby die during the prison storyline—which is being introduced early in the third season.
The television series has veered in and out of the comic's continuity, though it has adhered fairly closely to the broad strokes. Mazzara, coy as ever, wouldn't confirm that Lori bites the dust this season. But he did promise at least a few characters will:
"We talk about everyone's demise to the chagrin of all of the actors. All I can promise is there will be major character deaths throughout Season 3, but I can't possibly say who or where, but I guarantee all of them will be surprising."The "surprising" part stands out, because the television writers have developed a pretty good track record of reimagining and switching up the comic book story lines to keep it exciting (i.e. Shane's borrowed time, etc.), so we're definitely excited to see what Mazzara and company have in store.
Plus, to go along with all that death, Mazzara says season three could be the darkest yet for what is easily one of the bleakest shows on television:
"First of all, let me say this: We're not going to shy away from any dark material, but I will say that fans will be surprised at the dark material that we do show. What we actually take from the comic book and what original dark material we have coming up, will really surprise the audience. We're also in no rush to burn through that prison fight in a couple of episodes. This is something that we've been working toward and I'm not eager to just kind of burn things through. By the time the entire prison arc is done, I think people will be really satisfied in the way that we told that story."What do you think of the transition from page to screen? Which version do you prefer?
