Producer and FX guru Greg Nicotero teases that season six of The Walking Dead will introduce one of the biggest zombie threats to date. For a show about the apocalypse, that's a tall order.
Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead seasons 5-6!
Nicotero chatted with Melty about the upcoming sixth season, and teased that they plan to pay off on the "Wolves" storyline that was planted and teased through most of year five. There were a handful of references to the "Wolves," with many easter eggs consisting of walkers with a "W" carved into their heads. The closest we came to the mysterious group was the massive zombie trap Daryl stumbled into and Morgan's encounter with one of their scouts.
Outside of that? The group remains an enigma, wrapped in W's, wrapped in zombies. With the creative team hard at work on season six, Nicotero teased that the Wolves will become a major player soon. Their goal? Basically building a giant army of weaponized zombies:
"We set up the Wolves in Episode 16. I love those characters. The fact that you have people that are basically utilizing the people that they kill as ammunition to build a zombie army? We see them in Episode Nine when they get to Noah's neighborhood and we see the 'Wolves not far' in the background, and when the W-man at the beginning says to Morgan, 'Well, we're going to take you, too, but you're not exactly going to be alive,' we realize through the course of the episode that they are setting booby traps everywhere so that they can take people's possessions and then use them as a means to build the walkers in the traps, so it's kind of a diabolical plan."
