WATCH: 5 times witches were the good guys

Witches have often gotten a bad rap on big and small screens as evil practitioners of black magic. Take for example The Wizard of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West, Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent, Queen Ravenna from Snow White and the Huntsman, and Once Upon a Time’s Evil Queen (before she became good), just to name a few that quickly jump to mind.

But not all witches are your typical evil hags; some actually stand on the side of good, and SYFY WIRE has compiled a list of five times witches were actually the good guys in TV shows and movies. Let's have a look, shall we?

The first witch on our list is Outlander’s Geillis Duncan (this one has a bit of a spoiler alert going with it. Tread at your own peril if you haven't seen Sunday's episode). Geillis has done some pretty awful stuff over the course of the first season, but managed to redeem herself when she sacrificed her life for Claire, who was going to get burned at the stake alongside Geillis after being falsely accused of being a witch.

Then we have the four Halliwell sisters from TV’s Charmed (which is getting a reboot in case you guys didn’t know): Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and Paige, who were always good witches ready to help people. The other good witch on our list is none other than Professor Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter movie franchise: a great Hogwarts teacher and a steadfast friend to Dumbledore, who even led the charge against Voldermort and his Death Eaters.

We've also got Harry Potter’s bestie herself, Hermione Granger, who is smart, strong, and pretty much the strongest witch of her generation. And finally, though most people know about Sabrina the Teenage Witch, her aunts Zelda and Hilda Spellman are actually our favorites, a decision we fully defend in the video above.

Check it out, then let us know which good witches would make your personal top five?
