2018 will no doubt be one of the biggest years for Superman. DC Comics is celebrating the last son of Krypton's 80th anniversary, and Action Comics has its monster-sized hardcover celebration on April 11 to accompany the release of Issue #1000 one week later, on April 18. Writers Dan Jurgens and Peter Tomasi end their extremely underrated runs on Action Comics and Superman, respectively, and then the Brian Michael Bendis era begins. There's also the Krypton prequel series debuting on SYFY on March 21, too.

So, for our own celebration of Superman, we've come up with an essential list of essential comics that every Superman reader should read.

Coming up with good Superman stories is not a difficult task, but choosing ones that show his different sides, that give him context and texture, and that transcend the average superhero narrative was a challenge. We're talking about stories that placed his mythos under the microscope to create memorable Superman comics that stand the test of time and created thought-provoking conversations afterward. We found some classic single-issue stories that do this, but often Elseworlds stories and mini-series can heighten the best elements of Superman without the weight of 80 years' worth of continuity.

Here are 7 Essential Superman stories.

But it doesn’t end there! Dozens more were considered, including Superman: Red Son, John Byrne's reboot, and The Death of Superman. Be sure to list any of your favorites that we missed in the comments section below!
