Tomorrow's Big Game will showcase some of the biggest genre films to arrive in the near future, but the Alex Garland-directed Annihilation got a new TV spot ahead of the Super Bowl today. You can watch the new ad below, which doesn't have a ton of new footage but continues to amp up the mystery of "the Shimmer" and its strange effect on genetic material. Is Natalie Portman turning into some kind of plant monster or the furry, sharp-toothed creature stalking her expedition? Check out the spot and let us know your theories in the comments:
Portman plays Lena, the biologist of an all-female expedition into the Shimmer, also known as "Area X," which continues to expand along the American coastline. Lena is determined to discover the mystery of the disaster zone after her husband (Oscar Isaac) is the only one to return from a previous expedition with serious injuries. What she and her team discover is a terrifying new world of mutated animals and plants beyond anything seen in our own world. As they move further into Area X, the women begin to wonder whether they're going insane or being hunted by something sinister.
Adapted from the first book in Jeff Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach triology by Garland himself, Annihilation opens February 23, with Netflix handling distribution overseas. It was later revealed that such an unconventional deal was struck due to a disagreement between the movie's producers. This is only Garland's second directorial feature after he made a splash with the existential sci-fi thriller Ex Machina in 2015. Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), and Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok) all co-star.
