What is Superman's greatest weakness? Kal-El is almost invulnerable, but there is one thing that has been known to take him down time after time. It doesn't have to do with his constant brooding about women with alliterative L's in their names, and it has nothing to do with digitally removed mustaches, either. What has caused even more trouble for the last son of Krypton than a thousand Luthors at a super-suit convention? The substance known as Kryptonite, of course!
This mineral fragment from Superman's home planet of Krypton is most often depicted in comics/films/television shows in its original green form, which can greatly weaken the Man of Steel. Lex Luthor uses the stuff all the time, and even Superman's "friend" Bruce Wayne has been known to carry a bit of it with him. Though the classic green edition is the most widely used. it's far from the only kind of Kryptonite there is.
Superman lore has gradually added Kryptonite varieties for every color of the rainbow, ranging from red, to blue, to... periwinkle? Some of these versions are real, some are hoaxes, some were (thankfully) one-and-done gags, and some were the result of villainous experimentation. This fictional substance has almost as many flavors as a Baskin Robbins.
Watch below (or above) as we go through every iteration of Kryptonite in two minutes or less!
