I honestly don't know exactly how the first encounter will aliens will all go down (maybe a la Mars Attacks!), but something tells me it will be somewhat awkward, bewildering and potentially hazardous. Just the specific protocols and decorum required for such a diplomatic mission will be baffling, and mankind, for the most part, will be unable to predict the outcome beyond any basic measure. This first contact dilemma will be dissected in Denis Villeneuve's new sci-fi thriller, Arrival, with Amy Adams playing a linguist assigned to a classified team of scientists, including Jeremy Renner, recruited to make contact with an alien race aboard a mysterious egg-shaped "shell" spaceship as nuclear armageddon threatens. Do they come in peace?
Check out the unsettling pair of first clips below, showing more of the interior of the ET's creepy craft. The first video shows Adams venturing inside the alien ovoid and hesitantly reaching out to touch an opaque barrier when ... well, just watch the clip. The second peek shows the team entering the bottom of this weird vehicle and encountering gravitational anomalies inside. Whatever or whoever these visitors are, I just hope this isn't one of those tired message movies about the impending self-destruction of the Earth and the ETs acting as peacemakers warning us of the bad path we're on (think The Abyss or The Day The Earth Stood Still). Villeneuve is a pretty sophisticated filmmaker, and I've enjoyed his previous two features, so I'll keep the faith.
