When we asked Ashley A. Woods to draw on camera for SYFY WIRE's ongoing sketch video series, she threw us a bit of a curveball. The emerging artist, whose stunning line work for books like Stranger Comics' Niobe: She Is Life and BOOM! Studios' hit fantasy adventure series Ladycastle is getting her an increasing amount of acclaim and attention, decided she wanted to focus on inking for her video. Using watercolors, no less.
For most comic artists, sketching at conventions or store appearances or on-camera is not the time for experimentation. They're usually pressed for time and rely as much on muscle memory and practiced technique as anything else. Woods hadn't used watercolors for some time, so it was kind of a bold move. As you'll see in the video, she nailed it. The precise brush work really accentuates the anime influences in Woods' artwork, primarily in the facial details.
While she was creating a stunning portrait of Ladycastle's three lead characters -- Merinor, Aeve and Gwyneff -- Woods also explained why drawing in traditional pen and ink fashion is more fulfilling than the digital style that's becoming increasingly more common with today's artists. She also mentions artists like Joshua Middleton having a big influence on her art style.
