Ever fantasized about wondered how it would look like seeing Benedict Cumberbatch crawl on the floor? Wonder no more!
If you loved the Sherlock and Star Trek actor’s performance as Smaug the dragon on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, then this brand-new video featurette released by Weta Digital is definitely for you! It explains how the digital creature was brought to life by having Benedict Cumberbatch in a motion-capture suit, crawling over the floor and basically acting as if he WERE a dangerous fire-breathing dragon. (Method acting and all that.)
Animation supervisor David Clayton -- who narrates the clip -- said, "Having Benedict in a mo-cap suit was lots of fun -- for us, and hopefully for him, too -- and seemed to help get him immersed and hone in on the character." Adding, "The translation of performance from Benedict to Smaug wasn't a one-to-one match like you'd get from a humanoid creature. They have very different physiologies." You know, 'cause there's such a thing as living dragons. Still, every tiny detail that went into creating Smaug is absolutely breathtaking.
