Once again, Star Wars fans have been thinking outside the box and created something jaw-droppingly awesome. For your viewing pleasure, witness Bruce Lee fighting with lightsaber nunchucks.
YouTube user Patrick Nan has done an incredible job re-imagining a scene from Lee’s 1972 film Fist of Fury and bringing it into the Star Wars universe by adding effects to create a lightsaber battle where Lee uses his signature nunchuck skills with an added twist.
One of the great pleasures of the expansion of the Star Wars universe since Return of the Jedi brought the original trilogy to its conclusion is the re-envisioning of a whole range of different versions of the iconic laser sword. We’ve had lightsabers of every shade and hue, Darth Maul’s double-bladed version, Dooku’s elegant dueling lightsaber, and of course Kylo Ren’s hilt-guard activated, hacked broadsword. But Jedi Master Bruce Lee’s nunchuck sabers? Perhaps the most foolhardy Jedi weapon ever created, but also ostensibly a weapon requiring the most Jedi skill, proving Jedi Master Bruce Lee’s incomparable abilities.
When Bruce Lee passed away in 1973, he was already far along on the path of becoming a cultural icon and international action star. One of the most tragic aspects of losing someone so talented so young (Lee was 32 when he died) is the loss of the potentially great work they would have produced throughout their careers. Can you imagine an aged Lee showing up in a Tarantino movie? Or, more appropriately in this instance, playing a coveted role in the Star Wars universe? Science fiction on this scale had barely even been dreamed of at the point of his passing.
But thanks to the care and imagination of Patrick Nan, and an intrepid band of fans who are also becoming skilled filmmakers in their own right, we’re gifted these exciting glimpses of what might have been.
