In retrospect, the decision to cast former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista as Marvel's Drax the Destroyer was a stroke of genius. But on the first day of C2E2, Bautista recalled struggling to find roles after he left the world of wrestling behind. Bautista was also frank about feeling the wrath of fans when he signed on as Drax, but he added that their anger largely went away after his performance in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
At the panel, Bautista was joined by his Guardians co-star, Sean Gunn, who is best known for playing a Ravager named Kraglin in both films. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 bumped up Gunn's role, he was already a large presence on the set as the performer providing the motion capture and lines for Rocket. That experience has led to a very strong chemistry between Bautista and Gunn, which carried over to the panel.
One of Drax’s most hilarious lines in the sequel concerned his "sensitive nipples," although Bautista was quick to point out that he doesn't share his character's condition. Instead, he pointed the finger at Sean's brother, director James Gunn, who used Drax to mine that amusing personal tidbit for humor on the big screen. Bautista also credited James Gunn for providing Drax's comedic voice in his scripts.
For those of you who couldn't make it into this intergalactic event, SYFY WIRE is proud to present the full hour-long panel with Bautista and Gunn. And there are plenty of amusing stories and revelations along the way about the making of the first two Guardians movies, as well as some very positive experiences on the set of Avengers: Infinity War.
