Have you ever had a desire to break into the voiceover industry? Or do you want to know more about the performers behind your favorite characters in animation and video games? On the final day of C2E2, several world famous voice actors and actresses shared the stage to impart their knowledge to the crowd.
The lineup included the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, Tom Kenny; Wonder Woman’s alter ego, Susan Eisenberg; Star Wars Rebels and Guardians of the Galaxy actress, Vanessa Marshall; Futurama and MAD TV's Phil LaMarr, Critical Role's Laura Bailey; and the voice of D.Va in Overwatch, Charlet Chung. They were also joined by Fred Tatasciore, the man who has played the Hulk on several Marvel animated series, in addition to a long history in voiceover.
To start the panel, LaMarr was asked how he prepares for so many different roles. LaMarr said he always starts with the text, or the appearance of the character. He takes the characteristics that the writers are trying to convey and brings them together. An aspiring actress then asked Kenny how to find an agent. According to Kenny, he doesn’t know too much about that process since he's had the same agent since 1987; however, he did caution the young woman to be cautious and thoroughly look into the background of any agent before signing with them. It was also suggested that aspiring performers check out Demos That Rock, a professional voiceover demo production company that can help actors and actresses put together an excellent voice reel.
There’s a lot of valuable intel ahead, which you can watch in the panel below.
