In the past couple years, nothing in the world of creator-owned comics has been more entertaining and pleasurable than the emergence of Chip Zdarsky. Chip’s first breakout in comics came in 2013 as the artist of Sex Criminals, the brilliant and addictive Image Comics series he with does with Hawkeye writer Matt Fraction. Each issue highlights Zdarsky’s ability as a storyteller as well as a humorist in creating the most intricate detail in each store or coffee shop the characters enter (book titles and menus are my favorite).
When Chip began on the comic con circuit, everyone soon realized that Mr. Zdarsky wasn’t just a talented artist; he was often the funniest person in the room. His magnetic personality and playfulness quickly made him the Loki of the comic-book world, a consummate prankster who kept both fans and comic-book creators on their toes, wondering what scheme he was concocting next. His most recent work as writer of Marvel’s Howard the Duck, Archie’s Jughead and his own creator-owned comic series from Image, Kaptara, showcase this ability to build a storyline that is both exciting and hilarious. At New York Comic Con we talked with Chip about his work on the new Jughead comic, Kaptara, Howard the Duck and the next story arc of Sex Criminals.
