With Marvel's new live-action series Cloak & Dagger set to debut on Freeform in June, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the history of the comic book duo of Tyrone 'Ty' Johnson, aka Cloak, and Tandy Bowen, aka Dagger. The upcoming series will star relative newcomers Aubrey Joseph (The Night Of) and former Disney star Olivia Holt (I Didn’t Do It) as the titular characters.
SYFY WIRE has created a new concise video hosted by our very own Jackie Jennings that takes a quick stab at the history of the two lovers in two minutes. Watch it above or below!
Created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Ed Hannigan in 1982, Cloak and Dagger first appeared in the pages of Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 before headlining their very own dedicated miniseries. The story follows runaways Tyrone and Tandy, who got their superpowers (in the comics, at least) after surviving forced injections of a synthetic heroin, which prompts them to declare a war on drugs.
While Cloak has the power of to cloak himself in darkness and boasts powers of teleportation, intangibility and the ability to link to the "Darkforce Dimension," Dagger can craft daggers out of light, purge addictions from people, and use her light daggers to heal.
Over the years, Cloak and Dagger have fought alongside Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the X-Men and more, and were even part of Team Cap's Secret Avengers during the Civil War storyline. They even went toe-to-toe with some of Marvel's biggest baddies including Mephisto, Doctor Doom and the Mad Titan himself, Thanos.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger will debut on June 7 on Freeform. Are you ready for the new comic book series?
