Rail guns: They’re one of the most iconic science fictions weapons in the arsenal, and this guy made one in his garage.
This inventive fellow put together one heck of a large rail gun, firing 4.3g tungsten-core aluminum at 950V (1.3kJ) at a cantaloupe. According to the experiment notes, the EMP is so intense that it actually wiped out the Arduino control unit on the kit (luckily, it was repaired after a reset). The rig weighs approximately 20 pounds, and the creator claims he can fire a projectile at up to 560 mph.
As awesome as it is, Popular Science notes rail guns probably aren’t the future of small-scale warfare. Instead, the government is scaling the tech up to create large, mountable rail guns for ships and aircraft carriers. They still have a way to go until we see wide-scale deployment, but the future is (almost) here. Also, don't try this at home (duh).
