We've all heard this one before: A video game is used as a recruitment tool to enlist people in otherworldly combat.

You know why we've all heard that one? Because it's the plot of The Last Starfighter. And the producers of Hulu's new series, Future Man, know that their audience will recognize this plot ... and use it to the show's advantage.

In Future Man, Josh Hutcherson plays a pharmaceutical janitor who is obsessed with video games. One of his games turns out to be the aforementioned recruitment tool, and Josh's character must travel through time to prevent his boss from catching herpes, which leads to him seeking a cure for herpes, which will lead to the downfall of civilization.

At New York Comic Con, we spoke to series star Josh Hutcherson, showrunner Ben Karlin, and co-creators Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir on why they went with herpes.

All episodes of Future Man will be available on Hulu beginning November 14.
