Steven Spielberg is inarguably one of history's greatest filmmakers, given such a sterling resume of cinematic geek classics like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. And that's not even adding in his creative involvement in '80s favorites like The Goonies, Poltergeist, and Gremlins.
Spielberg, a comprehensive new documentary from HBO is hoping to explore the director's legendary magic and discover how he has pulled more lightning out of the bottle than nearly any other entertainer of his generation.
Susan Lacy, the Emmy Award-winning creator and former executive producer of the American Masters series on PBS, directs this feature length, in-depth examination of Spielberg's life and work using over 30 hours of exclusive interviews and commentary by a constellation of stars like J.J. Abrams, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Francis Ford Coppola, Daniel Day-Lewis, Brian de Palma, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Dreyfuss, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Ben Kingsley, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, Liam Neeson, Martin Scorsese, and Robert Zemeckis.
Testimonials and remembrances will be interspersed with rare BTS clips, home movies, and iconic footage from the master's nearly 50-year career, spanning his 1969 episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery to 2018's adaptation of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.
