The cast of The Gifted knew that when they signed onto this series, they weren't just coming onto any TV show -- they were entering the "huge franchise" and "beloved universe," as actress Jamie Chung (Blink) told SYFY WIRE at San Diego Comic-Con, of the X-Men.

"What Matt Nix did, he took this beloved universe and he made it his own. It's a bit more grounded, a bit more gritty," Chung teased. As previously noted, this doesn't take place in the same world as the X-Men film franchise. Instead, it's "in a world where the X-Men and the Brotherhood no longer exist."

Emma Dumont's Polaris will be introduced "in the middle of an action sequence." Her magnetic powers attract her to danger, and she's "a bit of a hothead," Dumont revealed. "She doesn't always use her powers for good -- if you do something wrong to someone she loves, she'll hurt you."

The world of The Gifted sees mutants persecuted in classic X-Men comic book style, or as Coby Bell puts it, they're "second-class citizens." It's core to the show, where Bell works for Sentinel Services, tracking down unregistered mutants.

Watch the full interview below for more on what to expect from these characters when they bring mutants home to TV in The Gifted, premiering October 2, 2017, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
