We caught up with writer-director Luc Besson and star Dane DeHaan to dig into Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, one of the buzziest surprise projects to hit Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this year.
Besson talked about the inspiration for the film, which is based on the French science fiction comics series Valérian and Laureline, written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières. Besson said he always loved the series, and had wanted to bring it to the big screen for decades, before finally getting the chance.
DeHaan talked about the relationship between Valérian (played by himself) and Laureline (played by Cara Delevingne), and how they tried to create a traditional type of relationship in a not-so traditional world. Oh, with a boatload of a**-kicking, too, of course. This is an epic sci-fi flick, after all.
Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets opens July 21, 2017.
