While previous video installments of Who Won the Week generally singled out a few of the things that marked the wonderful world of geekdom, this week’s edition will be straying a bit from the norm because there’s actually one thing that stood out from the crowd. That would be Marvel’s Black Panther, now playing in theaters.
The comic book movie starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther raked in S75.8 million on its first opening day (including Thursday advance screenings as well as Friday) and is expected to gross between $190-$210 million over the holiday weekend. Currently sitting at 97% Fresh on site aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is garnering some great reviews, and audiences are flocking to movie theaters to see the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda brought to life on the big screen.
SYFY WIRE’s Jackie Jennings is joined by contributing editor Karama Horne for the week of Feb. 12-16 to talk all things Black Panther. Oh, and in case you haven’t gotten the chance to see it yet, we’re keeping the whole thing as spoiler-free as humanly possible.
Some of the things that grabbed our attention were all the strong female characters inhabiting the movie, including the Dora Milaje, who are Black Panther’s personal bodyguards, led by Danai Gurira’s General Okoye. Then we have T’Challa’s little sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, as well as Lupita Nyong'o’s character, Nakia.
We also give praise to all the visual effects of director Ryan Coogler's movie, as well as the gorgeous costuming representing the different ethnic groups of Wakanda. Other highlights include Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger and Boseman’s T’Challa, who picks up where we left off at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
Did Black Panther also win the week for you?
