It's almost hard to believe that we've only been playing videogames for around 40 years. Their evolution in that time has been extraordinary—and that evolution comes into super-sharp relief in this video, which charts gaming from the primitive Pong to the exemplary Bioshock.
The thing that struck me watching this, as an old man who begged his dad for an Atari 2600 way back when, is the fact that each of these games felt like the greatest thing in the world when they came along. Every generation of games always feels like the best thing you've ever seen ... until the next generation.
Looking at the new crop of games at this year's E3 conference only reinforces the fact that tomorrow's games will always look better than yesterday's—while these three minutes show that there's always room for Mario.
Not only is this a pretty solid little history lesson, but it's got a pretty banging beat.
