After his masterstroke with The Avengers, Marvel has given Joss Whedon the keys to the kingdom for phase two of its cinematic universe. In typical Whedon style, he says he's planning to bring the pain the next time around.
Though Avengers did feature a few heartbreaking moments, the focus was mostly on bringing the team together and creating that high-note payoff of saving the world.
But for round two, Whedon said he'll be digging a little deeper into what makes these bigger-than-life characters tick—and give them some true pain to deal with in the upcoming sequels.
He told 24 Hours:
"The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."Whedon also touched on what his role will be in Phase 2, and reiterated that he's confident with the team in place, and only wants to be the guiding hand tying all the films together:
"Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don't want to be is the guy they dread, who's going to come in and say 'Oh, well I have the power to say change this.' I'm not that."What do you think of Marvel's appointment of Whedon as Grand Poobah over the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is he the man for the job?
